I thought this would be a great feature for JungleFever since the tire company’s latest calendar is really a travel spread. I was surprised to hear that Pirelli has tapped Steve McCurry, the legendary National Geographic photographer, to shoot its 2013 issue. This marks a new direction for the iconic and exclusive calendar, which is known for its steamy shots of models and actresses in exotic locations always taken by fashion photographers.
Every year I await the new calendar with excitement as it combines by two big loves: hot models and lush locales. And what could be more exciting than having top models shot by the ultimate travel photographer? But I’m not loving it. Yes, McCurry’s images are beautiful environmental portraits, but the real star is the vibrant and gritty Rio de Janeiro. As a travel series, great! But for the Pirelli calendar? These are hardly the sexy images tacked to the wall of an auto body shop.
On the plus side, I’m loving this behind-the-scenes video from the shoot. Rio has never looked better, and I always appreciate watching top photographers at work.
Pirelli, I vote for bringing sexy back. Below are a few of my faves from previous years.
2006 Calendar shot by Patrick Demarchelier in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
2008 Edition shot by Patrick Demarchelier in Beijing, China.
2006 Calendar shot by Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott in Cap D’Antibes, France
What do you think of McCurry’s images for Pirelli?
